A Lesson from My Couch Yesterday
Hello lovely soul,
I usually glide into your inbox every Monday with fresh thoughts and inspiration—but yesterday, I paused. In years past, I’d have pushed through even when physically weak. But recently I’ve learned that honoring rest isn’t slacking—it’s smart medicine.
So, I curled up on the couch and read a book for most of the day. My motivation was absolutely zero. And yet, today, feeling restored, I woke up ready to plan, create, and get things done. Had I forced myself to be productive yesterday, I’d likely still be dragging today—with less energy and creativity to show for it.
Turns out, there’s science behind this too. Research shows that even a brief rest—micro-breaks under 10 minutes—can significantly reduce fatigue and boost vigor, and longer breaks offer even more restoration for demanding creative tasks PMC.
So here’s the gentle reminder: Rest isn't a cave-in—it’s a powerful reset. Honor those moments when your body whispers—and sometimes shout—that it needs a pause.
You can let the reset unfold naturally for you—whether that looks like a cozy book, a mindful walk, or simply doing nothing at all. Notice what happens in your body afterwards.
Reframe Rest
How would you feel if you reframed rest as part of productivity?
What if you normalized rest as a part of a routine, instead of thinking of it as a weakness or failure?
What if you viewed rest not as avoidance, but rate as a strategic, self-aware recharge to boost wellness and creativity?
Sending restful hugs—and good energy for the week ahead, Julie
Doing nothing is sometimes the most powerful something.
