Choosing a Different Perspective
If you had asked me a week ago if I liked pumpkin pie, I would have given you a definitive, "No." I always passed on pumpkin pie each Thanksgiving. I love pumpkin.
In fact this week, all kinds of yummy pumpkin things have been coming out of my kitchen, (including the pumpkin sourdough loaf in the pic above.) But pumpkin pie? Never been a fan.
Until yesterday.
I'd made a pumpkin pie for Curt this weekend, because he loves a good pie, especially pumpkin. And as I cut off just one more small sliver of the pie (I'd already had one small sliver, and then another) I realized I can't truthfully say that I don't like pumpkin pie anymore.
It was so delicious! Just like that, my perspective on pumpkin pie had changed.
This thought reminded me of how useful it is to view life from multiple perspectives.
🍁 Maybe it’s that friend whose choices you’ve never quite understood, until you learn what’s behind them.
🍁 Or a daily routine you’ve always found dull—until you change the soundtrack, the setting, or your mindset and it feels entirely different.
🍁 Or even a season of life you once resisted, that you later look back on with gratitude because of what it taught you.
Was the pumpkin pie different from the homemade pumpkin pies I grew up with? Yes, but not really. The distinct pumpkin flavor was there. The texture was the same. I still topped it with loads of fresh whipped cream.
So what opened me to experiencing pumpkin pie differently?
I had only made tiny changes–I added toasted pecans to the crust, a little Triple Sec to the filling, maple syrup to sweeten the whipped cream and dusted the top with cinnamon and nutmeg. Small changes, but they shifted everything.
It makes me wonder what small changes you could make to the things or circumstances you currently have to live with—but don’t particularly care for.
Maybe it’s:
🍂 Rearranging a cluttered space and adding a houseplant so it feels more calming.
🍂 Turning a daily walk into a mini mindfulness practice.
🍂 Adding a candle, playlist, or soft light to make a mundane evening routine of getting ready for another day of the same more enjoyable.
🍂 Setting a boundary or shifting your mindset around a responsibility that drains you.
🍂 Infusing a repetitive task (like laundry or dishes) with ritual — music, scent, intention.
🍂 Or even finding gratitude in something that feels like a burden. What could it be trying to teach you?
Sometimes it only takes a small adjustment—an extra sprinkle of cinnamon or a shift in perspective—to discover something surprisingly sweet right where you are.
Wishing you a multitude of sweet perspectives this week, Julie ❤️
I am willing to taste life with fresh curiosity.
